Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about BikePass and the BikePass ID — short and to the point.

What is BikePass?

BikePass is your digital bicycle pass, including Europe-wide registration. It stores master data, photos, components, receipts, and unique proof of ownership – all GDPR-compliant and securely hosted in Europe.

What is the BikePass ID (coding set)?

The BikePass ID is a special sticker and protection set that allows you to uniquely mark your bicycle. The robust, tamper-proof sticker contains an individual ID and a QR code linked to your digital BikePass. This way, a finder, buyer, or the police can immediately identify your bike.

How exactly does the coding/sticker ID work?

With a coding kit, you’ll receive two tamper-proof stickers—one for your bike and one for your battery, if you own an e-bike.

After attaching it, link the ID in the BikePass app to your bike. If it’s found or inspected, anyone can scan the code and receive the relevant information without seeing your personal data.

Is the coding tamper-proof?

The sticker is:

  • not removable without leaving residue
  • UV, weather, and heat resistant
  • protected from abrasion by laminate
  • uniquely assigned to an ID

This makes it extremely difficult for thieves to remove or replace, but of course, not impossible.

Can I use BikePass without a sticker?

Yes. You can register your bike entirely online—even without a BikePass ID. However, for maximum protection, we recommend using both the digital pass and the physical code.

What happens if my bicycle is stolen?

You can report the theft in the BikePass web app. The ID becomes visible to authorities, and you receive proof of ownership for the police and insurance. Finders can contact you anonymously.

Does reporting the theft to BikePass replace reporting it to the police?

No, we always recommend reporting the theft and filing a police report. This can also be referenced in your BikePass.

What happens if someone finds my bicycle and scans the QR code?

When scanned, the finder receives a page with:

  • Information about the authenticity of the bike
  • Indications that the bike has been reported missing or stolen (if applicable)
  • Option to contact you via an anonymous channel

There will be no personal data disclosed.

Is BikePass compatible with the police?

Yes. As a Europe-wide registry, BikePass is also accessible to government agencies.

When they find a bicycle or conduct a check, police and public order authorities can quickly determine whether it is registered or has been reported stolen—either through the search function or via our BikePass API.

Can I transfer my BikePass to the next owner?

Yes, it's very simple. You can digitally transfer your bike to the new owner with just a few clicks. This builds trust during a sale and prevents misuse.

Do I have to take my bike somewhere to get it coded?

No! With the BikePass coding kit, you can install it yourself at home—no tools, no appointments, no waiting.

Does BikePass also work with other coding systems (e.g., ADFC)?

Yes. You can easily enter existing codes or serial numbers into BikePass to create a complete proof of ownership.

What is the difference between BikePass and other coding systems like ADFC coding or serial numbers?

Other markings, such as the serial number or the ADFC code, provide only local or limited identification, but no digital proof of ownership.

Serial number:

  • Issued by the manufacturer
  • Often hard to find
  • Not centrally registered
  • No ownership assignment
  • Easily removable or paintable over

ADFC coding:

  • Engraving only possible on-site
  • Damages the frame, voids warranty, or is not possible on modern frames (carbon)
  • Not uniformly accessible across Europe
  • No central, accessible database
  • Difficult to transfer ownership
  • No direct way to contact the owner

BikePass & BikePass ID:

  • Digital registration + physical ID
  • Available across Europe
  • Unique proof of ownership (photos, components, documents)
  • Anonymous contact option for finders
  • Easy to attach at home
  • Quick ownership transfer upon sale
  • Compatible with existing serial numbers and codes

In short: BikePass is the modern, digital, and Europe-wide verifiable evolution of traditional coding systems.

Is BikePass GDPR compliant?

100%. All data is hosted in Europe and is only visible to you, unless you explicitly share parts of it (for example, when selling your bike or if it's found).

What types of bicycles is BikePass suitable for?

For all types: city bikes, mountain bikes, road bikes, e-bikes, cargo bikes, folding bikes, custom bikes, or bikes you've built yourself.

How long does registration take?

Less than 3 minutes.

Apply the sticker, scan the QR code, fill in the information—done.

How much does BikePass cost?

We don't like subscription models, so we've come up with a simple pricing model:

  • BikePass Basic costs a one-time fee of 9.90€.
  • The BikePass ID is a one-time purchase.
What if I need to replace or re-attach the sticker on my bike or the ID?

You can reorder replacement stickers and easily update or re-link the ID in the app.

What happens if I lose my smartphone?

No problem. BikePass is a web app. You can log in on any device – your bike data remains securely stored.

Can I register multiple bicycles?

Yes, as many as you like. BikePass is also suitable for families, clubs, and vehicle fleets.
