An alarm and an immobiliser are useful additions, but no substitute for a lock – they pay off most on e-bikes, where the electronics are already on board.
In 2025, around 214,000 bike thefts were reported in Germany, and only about one in nine cases was solved (source: the German police crime statistics (Polizeiliche Kriminalstatistik) 2025). No wonder many people look for extra protection for their bike: an alarm, an immobiliser, app functions on the e-bike. Here we explain what this technology really delivers – and what it cannot do.
Bicycle alarms
A bicycle alarm works with a motion or vibration sensor: if the bike is lifted, tilted or the lock is tampered with, a loud signal sounds. Today the technology comes in various forms – as a standalone alarm lock that locks and sounds an alarm at the same time, or as a small module on the frame or in the rear light that you combine with a normal lock. We deliberately do not name test winners or specific models here – the range on the market is wide, and what suits you depends on your bike and where you park it.
The actual effect is simple but effective: attention is a thief's enemy. A loud alarm on an open street or in a bike cellar draws eyes – exactly what nobody wants while breaking someone else's lock. The limits are just as real. Alarms sometimes go off for no reason – a gust of wind, a knock in the bike rack – and that leads to what is known as the habituation effect: if you have heard a neighbouring bike's alarm ten times, you stop reacting the eleventh time. Then there is the battery: a flat battery turns the alarm into silent metal. So checking it regularly is part of the deal.
Immobilisers
An immobiliser stops someone riding away on your bike – not from taking it away. You know the mechanical principle from the classic frame lock: a shackle blocks the rear wheel so it can no longer turn. Electronic versions link this locking function to a lock, a chip or – on an e-bike – to the motor, and release it only with the right code, key or app.
The difference from the protection a locking-up lock gives is important: an immobiliser makes the bike unusable, but not immovable. Anyone who simply lifts it, loads it into a van or wheels it away on a sack trolley bypasses the immobiliser completely. So an immobiliser does not replace a lock that fixes your bike to a solid object – it complements it.

Manufacturer e-bike systems
Many e-bike drive manufacturers now build alarm and locking functions straight into their systems. One well-known example is Bosch eBike Lock, which locks the motor via app – other drive manufacturers now offer similar functions. We deliberately do not go into details of individual systems here, because the range of functions and their availability differ by manufacturer, model year and update status – it is best to check directly with the maker of your drive system.
The principle is similar in all cases: with the motor locked, you can still push the bike, but there is no assistance – and for most thieves that makes an e-bike far less attractive. What these systems cannot do: prevent the bike being carried off. A locked motor does not stop anyone lifting the bike into a vehicle and breaking or stripping it elsewhere at their leisure.
That is exactly why extra technology pays off especially on e-bikes: the battery already supplies power, the control unit is already fitted – so the alarm function and locking system can be used with comparatively little extra effort, whereas on a simple everyday bike they would have to be retrofitted specially.
What pays off, and when
Not every bike needs the full kit. A rough plan, by bike type:

As a rule of thumb for the lock: budget around 10 % of the bike's value. There is no comparable formula for an alarm or an immobiliser – what matters more here is how high your personal theft risk is where you park day to day, for example at a busy railway station or in a bike cellar with many bikes. The order matters: first match the lock to the bike's value, then think about which extra technology really helps in your own everyday life – not the other way round.
The effective chain: lock, alarm, security marking
The best protection is always a chain, not a single part. Your protection checklist
- Do you have a good, tested lock – matched to the bike's value (rule of thumb: around 10 % of the bike's value)?
- Alarm added where it makes sense, battery checked regularly?
- On an e-bike: is the manufacturer's locking system activated?
- Have you considered an immobiliser for a high-value bike or cargo bike?
- Frame number, photos and receipts stored digitally?
